Who is in Control of the Change in Your Life?

When you are struggling with the amount of change in your life, taking some time out to think about who is controlling that change can have a quick and easy benefit.

There can be two aspects of this:
– Who has decided that the change will happen in the first place?
– Who decides how the change is implemented?

For me

Both have a huge impact for me.  If I’m in control of both then I’m happy.  If someone else decides change must happen then I’m ok if I can control the implementation of the change.  When I decide the change is going to happen and I don’t get to control the implementation it drives me nuts!  If I have no control over either…well, let’s just say I struggle.  Now this isn’t true of everyone.  Some people may prefer someone else to take the responsibility for making the decision that change has to happen. That may be particularly true in the work place. Equally it may be easier for some to follow someone else’s lead in the implementation.  You probably knew your own personal response as soon as you read the two questions above.

For you

Knowing your personal preference may not alter the circumstances that you find yourself in, it rarely does, but it will give you an understanding of your reactions. Then you can take a look to see if you can bend the circumstances to fit your personal preference.  Maybe you can make some of the smaller change decisions, become part of the implementation team, ask someone else to make the decisions or control the changes.  Just explaining to those involved how you are feeling is often a great first step.

For example, for me if change is being imposed upon me I can look to see how much I can control the implementation.  I can look at whether there are areas that I can make decisions in, or can I influence the outcome in a way that will make me feel more comfortable and in control.

This is certainly a time of change for us all and a lot of it is out of our hands.  If we take some time to consider our reactions we can find ways to make it a far more comfortable process for ourselves and the people around us.
