The review continues, albeit slowly. I was expecting to be working Bank Holiday but Mike was unexpectedly home so I was able to enjoy spending the day with him. I’ve been concentrating recently on taking the opportunity to make the most of the time I get with Mike, friends and family. Whatever goals I may have work wise I want to keep my priorities and not feel that I ‘should’ be working instead.
Specialist – Ah the quest to find the specific area of coaching that I want to specialise in, and excel in, continues. Every time that I think I may have it sussed something else pops up and reminds me that I am interested in that as well. In business there is a lot of pressure to niche and though I understand this intellectually it is still something I resist. There is no doubt that being a specialist can be extremely valuable but I’m also coming to realise that we still need some generalists who are capable of having the overview and pulling all the specialisms together. If I look back over my life to date I can see that I have always been interested in more than one thing at a time and my biggest strength in the world of employment was that I was able to juggle several differentareas at once. So for this section I am currently questioning what being a specialist means to me.

Action Plan – maintain my list of possible specialisms. Talk to others about their feelings on this topic. How many ‘Jack of all Trades’ are out there and do they feel that it would be useful to have some support in maintaining this direction for themselves as it suits their personality?
Expanding – Well… yes of course I’d love to expand my business. Quite frankly I’d like to earn more but also I’d like to have a greater impact with my work as well. As I’ve been carrying out this work on myself I’ve come to realise that I would like to have a more positive impact on the planet as a whole. I have recently come across the idea of a triple bottom line business: profit, people and planet and this feels like it really aligns with my values. Any decision’s that I make going forward about how to expand my business will be made keeping this in mind.
Action Plan – This is one area that I am not going to be persuing aggressively for now. I feel that it needs some time and some consideration. I have a course booked in October that I expect to help with this both for me and my clients.
Listening – this one is my stock in trade and is a skill that I want to continue to develop.
I have noticed in my personal life that I’m finding it very easy to get distracted and not to listen well. My hearing is also suffering the problems of old age so this is something I need to monitor.
Action Plan – Speak to Michelle (Mind for Wellbeing) about some mindedness practices to help still my mind. Be conscious and aware of when my thoughts are travelling and practice bringing myself back to what is being said.
Follow through – This is about making sure that I do the things that I say I’ll do and more. About following up with the clients I’ve worked with to continue to encourage them to take steps to move forward and to show them that someone has their back, is in their corner and is rooting for their success.
Action Plan – keep doing what I do. If I say I’ll send information etc make a note to remind me to do so and add it to my to do list before my butterfly mind moves on. I need to remember to apply it to writing these posts as well!
